Mosquitoes are a common nuisance in Malta, especially during the warmer months. The presence of stagnant water in urban areas provides ideal breeding grounds for these pesky insects. The most common species found in Malta is the Culex pipiens, which is known to transmit diseases such as West Nile virus.

Year round mosquito forecast

Due to the warm and humid climate in Malta, mosquitoes are able to thrive throughout the year. In addition to Culex pipiens, Aedes albopictus, also known as the Asian tiger mosquito, has been identified in the region. This species is a known vector for diseases such as dengue fever and chikungunya.

The Hypogeum of Ħ in Malta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is not immune to the mosquito problem. The underground structure, dating back to prehistoric times, provides a dark and humid environment that is conducive to mosquito breeding. Visitors to the site are advised to take precautions such as wearing insect repellent and long sleeves to avoid mosquito bites.
